What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Repair

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little bad luck, but we sometimes see heat pump issues in Pella during the colder seasons, when they’re necessary to keep you comfortable. While you know the team at Van Haaften Plumbing & Heating will constantly be there ASAP when you require us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to double check a repair is important and save yourself some cash if it’s not. We’ve compiled this checklist of things to test before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound silly, but make sure everything is switched “on”. We’ve been to more than a few calls only to find the thermostat or the heat pump itself is turned off.
    • Look at your thermostat to make sure it’s on, switched to the appropriate temperature and isn’t fixed to cool.
    • Then try replacing the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks accurate, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re not sure where it is) and check your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Confirm that your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t switched on, revisit your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, make certain that it’s showing the correct time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s actually night, it may not kick your heat on because it doesn’t understand that you’re home.
  3. Is an obstruction causing your furnace to breakdown?
    • Inspect your air filters to make sure they’re not jamming things up.
    • Do you have any obstructed ducts, vents or cool air openings?
    • Are all supply registers exposed?
    • Is your exhaust flue open?

If you’ve gone through this checklist and you’re still deprived of heat, call Van Haaften Plumbing & Heating at 641-628-3621 or schedule an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the warm and cozy place it should be.
